THE MARAE VISIT

Response to the Marae Visit

On Thursday the 23rd of June Room 15 and Room 14 went to the Aorangi marae. At the marae we learnt a lot of new things. We took turns at looking at parts of the marae. Room 15 started inside the meeting house known as the wharenui. In the wharenui we looked at parts of the rafters and backbone. On the rafters there were kowhaiwhai patterns. Also on the backbone there were kowhaiwhai patterns that repeated its self. We had to do a sketch of the backbone and rafters.
After we finished we went out to the front gate/wahanui. Out at the front gate we had to draw and write all the names on the front gate into our topic book. The names were Te Rama, Meihana, Kapene and Aperahama. Tahuriwakanui Hapu was the tribe name tribe.
After we looked at the front gate we went to the dining hall known as the wharekai and said our karakia. Room 15 said theirs first then Room 14.
After we had our kai we went into the wharenui and said our mihi. A mihi is when you introduce yourself in Maori. We took turns at saying our mihi. Room 15 then Room 14.
After we finished we went back to Lytton Street School.

I learnt that there was another name for the meeting house/wharenui/whare tupuna - Andrew.

I learnt that the marae was like a person because the front gate was like the mouth and the meeting house was the body - Kiana

Young Leaders Day 2011

On the 24 of May 8 pupils (House Leaders) from Lytton Street School drove to Young Leaders day in Palmerston North at the Regent Theatre

Jack: My favourite speaker was Alison Mooney because it gave me more information about who I was eg. my personality type. She explained the story about a lion, otter, beaver and a golden Retriever. Then Alison gave us phrases, we chose the phrase that represented us the most. My animal was a bit of them all. Sometimes I want to be the lion and get everything done and sometimes I feel like studying so I am a beaver. I like to have fun with everything I do so that makes me a otter and I am a great listener like the golden retriever. I loved listening to all the speakers they had to offer. I really enjoyed going to Young Leaders. It was great



Kaea: My favorite speaker was Nick Tuitasi because he said a lot of good rules to help you in life. I think all of the other speakers were very helpful and gave a lot of advice of being a leader. I was a bit sad because 3 people were not able to come and they were John Key, Brook Fraser, and Jason Gunn. When we were playing games I got chosen to go on the stage and do a fitness contest that was called a beep test and I came third. It was lots of fun.



Riley: My favourite thing was when all the speakers said something about what they have been through in their life, for example Pat Buckley because he had so much disappointment in his young life, it was quite hard just listening to him. Also my favourite speaker was Dave Atkinson because he still taught us all of the stuff he was meant to but in a funny way and that drew me in.

Visualising in Reading

This term our reading focus is Visualising. Visualising is when you paint a picture in your mind of what you are reading to help with understanding the story.
We have been doing fun reading activities like the picture quilts from The BFG and the chapter - The Big Plan

After listening to the The Fly-away Umbrella we drew a picture of something that created a picture in our heads.

As a whole class we drew a story map from The Fly-away Umbrella using pictures and words. In our groups we then drew story maps of the current book we have been reading.

Last term in room 10 at maths time we were learning about graphs and surveys.
To make this graph about room 10's favourite meat we used Keynote. We had a great time learning how to use it.

Book Fair 2011

This year in 2011 Lytton Street School had a Book Fair. At the Book Fair we sold almost $1,200 worth of books. Also at the Book Fair we had a competition on how many snakes were in the bowl and all up there were 427 snakes that were split between 2 boys.. Tw0 boys guessed the right number so they had to split the prize between them. To enter the competition you had to purchase a book.

Jump For Heart 2011

SKIPPING FOR 2011 JUMP ROPE FOR HEART.

This term we are preparing for jump rope for heart by skipping every Friday and at fitness time. We also have a booklet with some basic skills that we are trying to get better at like basic and running step. These are some of the more difficult jumps: criss-cross, heel tap, double under and peek-a-boo.

Today we practised some long rope activities. It was fun running through the ropes and also doing 'Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear plus the birthday rhyme.

Welcome to Term Two

This Term we have been focusing again how we can CONTRIBUTE. We have taken this into our little businesses in a program called PrEP which stands for PRIMARY ENTERPRISE PROGRAM. Leading on from CONTRIBUTE is RISK TAKING which I am sure is going to happen in our businesses.

With this program we are making our own little businesses. For example some are 'Happy Sacks', Frost Bites, "King of Rock' and 'Movie World.'

We are learning how a business works and we have taken on roles to provide our products or services.

We are all trying to contribute to making a successful business.

We will finish off with a Market Day which will take place on the 9th of June 2011.

Our parents will be able to buy at the Market Day. They will exchange real money for LSS dollars.

Our second half of Term 2 will be based around the Marae. We will be going to visit Aorangi Marae and our focus will be Art.

Pentathlon at Massey Athletics Track April 2011

Ten children aged 7 years to 10 years were selected to attend Round 3 of a pentathlon held at the Massey Track and represent Lytton Street School. These children were picked from our LSS Standards and Championship days. They competed in five events: 60m, 400m, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus.
We were fortunate enough to have 8 of the athletes receive a certificate for coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall in their age group. A real credit to the competitiveness in which they competed on the day.
The hardest event was the 400m as it was the last event and also it is not an event we do at our own athletics. It was a privlege to see none of our athletes give up when running the 400m. They definitely deserved their lunch after this.
A great day, lots of success and ten happy but tired athletes.

Riro Wins Week 6

ROOM 15 RIRO members proudly holding up the house points board.
RIRO house wins Week 6 house points. RIRO have not done this for a long time. There was lots of cheering in the Senior Stars assembly when it was announced. RIRO coming first at the swimming sports contributed a lot to this. Congratulations to everyone who competed and helped RIRO to win. Go RIRO!!!!!!!!!

Room 15 2011

Welcome to Room 15. We are an energetic bunch of children who are looking forward to a fun year with lots of learning. Teamwork and Quality are going to be words you will hear a lot from us.

K E Anderson

To start the year for reading we have been learning about K E Anderson and reading her stories.
She writes about her experiences as a teacher. Most of her stories are funny.
Karen Anderson used to teach at our school. The room she taught in is now part of the library.
Karen then went to North Street school to teach and the caretaker then was Mr Ellen who is now a wonderful cleaner at our school.


When I was reading a K E Anderson book called "The Game" I felt like I was where she was writing the story. Her story had so much detail. K E Anderson has gone so far, she is such a great author. - Riley

My favourite story so far is "The Game" because its hillarious because the kids were playing indoor basketball - Sam

I love The Pump House Crocs. It makes me laugh because Karen made it so convincing. - Jack

MURRAY WILSON/Manawatu Standard RELUCTANT BLOGGER: Russell Street School teacher Stephen Baker helps his "Digiridoos'' class update their award-winning blog
The buzz of creative learning has transformed a Palmerston North teacher from IT-illiterate to the country's top classroom blogger.

Stephen Baker and his Russell Street School class, the Digiridoos, won Best Class Blog at the Interface magazine awards recently.

Mr Baker admitted to being a "reluctant blogger" three years ago, but the tech bug took hold, inspiring him to use a blog to capture children's attention.

The students post videos, photos, games and daily lesson updates on theinsandouts.co.nz, drawing about 100 viewers per day.

Mr Baker said children learn more when they're having fun and interacting.

"The blog makes our class open 24/7. The kids don't realise they're learning things.

"It's visual, it's their language – games, videos, iTouches – that's what kids know. They're only nine- or 10-years-old but they've grown up with it."

The blog has attracted viewers from the United States, Europe and Asia, including expat grandparents interested in their grandchildren's learning.

Children publish their work online and write personal blogs that are linked into the main page.

"It's communicating to the world. That's what the blog does, it brings everyone to you," Mr Baker said.

The children's IT knowledge would baffle most adults – a position Mr Baker was in when he began teaching nine years ago.

The buzz of being creative online spurred him to learn about making the most of technology.

Something must have clicked, as his former class at Hokowhitu School came runner-up in the blog competition last year.

The Russell Street School pupils are thrilled by the win.

"The children are stoked because it's like our little baby."

The school benefited too, winning a laptop valued at $1500.

Gravity Experiments

Room 15 have been working on things to do with space and gravity. We have done 3 experiments with paper and a shoe. The first experiment was with a flat piece of paper and a shoe to see which one would land first. The second experiment was with a piece of paper folded twice then third it was a screwed up piece of paper. The results are in the videos above. After this we had to write our results in our books. It was fun learning too.
