Pop Art Task

Flax flower using cartoon and painted picture effects before selecting pop art.

We are learning to use a range of effects to create a piece of pop art.

Go to the link (under Topic) on our blog for terrific tools and choose the programme Fotoflexer.

Click Watch a Demo and practice using one of the images - flower, bridge or girls.

Play with the effects then choose pop art to see what the final picture will look like. Remember this is your practice one.

Then choose a photo from our photo library - this will be the one you save.

Choose an effect - the last one you choose will be pop art.

Save - look on the screen for this word.

Give your picture a name and save in documents in your own folder.

Have fun - by the end of today's session you all want to have a piece of pop art saved in your folder.

Pop Art by Andy Warhol

As part of our Arts unit we are looking at the Rock n Roll music era and for visual art - Pop Art.

Pop Art used the imagery and techniques of advertising and popular culture icons for their subject matter. It reproduced everyday objects like soup cans, comic strips and advertisements.

Andy Warhol was a young artist in the 1950s. He produced artwork in many media including painting, photography, printmaking and film.

Ruby and Rachels fun day interviewing the Minster Of Education

On the 20th of October, we (Rachel and Ruby), Michelle (Ruby's mum), and Mr Lovegrove (our principal) went to Parliament in Wellington to interview the Minister of Education, Anne Tolley. Mr Lovegrove is the editor of New Zealand's Principal magazine and he was lucky enough to score an interview with the Minister so he thought it would be a good opportunity for us to be able to interview her.

We had to get up very early so we could be in Wellington on time for our 10.15am appointment. When we arrived we walked straight to the Beehive to check in for our appointment. We didn't have to wait as the Minister was already ready for us. We sat down and admired her lovely big office while we were in one of her chairs before we started our interview. We got to ask 2 questions each.

Ruby's first question - Why did you choose to be Minister of Education?

Minister - You don't get to choose - John Key just offers you the job and you're silly not to take it. But if I got to choose what I could be Minister of - I would choose Education.

Rachel's first question - What have been your ups and down's during your time as Minister?

Minister -I have really enjoyed going and visiting schools, but I don't get a lot of time to see them. She showed us her schedule, it was very long!

Ruby's second question - Who were your role models early in life? Who inspired you?

Minister - I have always admired strong women in history like Elizabeth the First.

Rachel's second question - What other jobs would you like to do?

Minister - I would really like to be a full time Grandma.

Then Mr Lovegrove asked a few of his questions, we took some photos and then that was the end of our interview. We went back to the car and started to drive to Fisherman's Table. When we arrived we sat down and started enjoying the little games that we got on our kids menu. We all had delicious meals, Chicken, Burgers and fish. After lunch at Fisherman's Table we carried on driving back home.

It was a great experience interviewing the Minister Of Education and a really fun day!

Seeds for schools

W.A.L.T: transplant seedlings (pingao) into root training trays.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

First fill the root training trays with soil.

Use a plastic knife to carefully cut out a tiny Pingao plant.

Hold the Pingao and dig a small hole using our free hand.

Then fill the trays with the baby plants!

These pingao plants will be cared for by Awapuni Nurseries and when they are big enough will be planted out at a beach, helping to preserve the sand dunes.

We worked with Kelly Slater from the Department of Conservation.

Tukutuku panel

Room 15 has been working on a tukutuku panel since the beginning of term 3. We are three quarters finished. One of them hasn't even been started though. The creators of them are Jachin, Mason, Ruby, Lucy, Summer and Alexa although all the class has helped. Summer is working on drawing the fourth pattern. The aim is to have it completed by the end of the year.

This Is our Blog group task. We had to use an application to send a message about the D.A.R.E program. Me, Micheal and Natalie did this scrapblog presentation.

I think:

I did a straight handstand first. I needed to work on landing on the vault with out stumbling.

When I did my handstand twist on the vault at badge testing I got a 9.5 out of a possible 10.

A busy week - Mrs Trembath learning to use 'bubblus'

Tukutuku Panels

In Term 3 all the Senior Star classes are making a tukutuku panel. Our class got with a buddy and designed a pattern for our panel. We also had to come with a meaning for our design - what it symbolized. The class chose 4 patterns to be transferred onto the panel .

The photo is showing work in progress. We will update you with news about the panel as it progresses.

Reading

Super Stars and Reading Racers have been reading novels. The books were: Madam Spry and Mr Mustard and Tas and the Tagger.

The W.A.L.T. for Super Stars was: We are learning to reread to help with meaning.

And Reading Racers W.A.L.T. : We are learning to read on for more information.

Our main task is to summarise the chapters we are reading and we are also completing a character profile.

Super Stars liked these parts of the novel:

Bailey: Madam Spry was captured by Mr Mustard.

Tasha: Hugo ate Madam Spry's lime flavoured jelly beans.

Caleb: Mr Mustard made an illusion of a headless man with a sword in his hand.

Kayla: Madam Spry defeats Mr Mustard.

Natasha: Madam Spry sang and all the windows broke in Mr Mustard's house.

Reading Racers liked these particular parts in their novel.

Michaela: Tas and Josh pushed the mattresses on top of the tagger.

Natalie: Tas saying a speech at the marae.

Logan: The tagger chasing the boys.

Devon: Tas and Josh playing on the mattresses when they weren't supposed to.

Classics

The reading groups Rockin' Rhinos and Pink Panthers have been reading classics. Our Learning Intention is to summarise a novel. Some of the titles we are reading include The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Little Mermaid, Lord Of The Rings and Peter Pan.

We have been doing chapter summaries while reading our book, an A-Z exciting/intriging words list and an author study as well as finding out what makes a novel a classic.

Tangimoana beach!!

On Tuesday Room 15 and Room 14 went to Tangimoana beach to plant spinifex as part of the program set by DOC, seeds for schools. We planted spinifex on the dunes so they can help the dunes to protect the beach. We worked with Kelly Stratford from the Department of Conservation

YOUNG LEADERS DAY

Buenas Dias,

My name is Shawanda. On Monday the 15th of June, 10 of our 11 young leaders went to a  young leaders day in Palmerston North. I was one of the lucky ones to go. There was 5 speakers and my two favourite were Babara Kendall and Farah Palmer. I thought that those 2 speakers had an amazing stories to tell all the leaders. When Farah walked on stage, she sung a song for us. The song was about the Black Ferns. When she was finished she continued on to talk about her life and how she became a leader of a sports team. Farah had alot of things to talk about. The other speaker i enjoyed was Barbara Kendall. Barbara is a wind surfer and was previously on Dancing with the Stars. Babara started talking about how she became a wind surfer. Babara said how she was nervous about doing dancing with the stars and she nearly wanted to give up because she was so stiff. I really enjoyed the day and i hope that maybe one day I'll see your blogs about young leaders.

Well, as Shawanda said, 11 young leaders went to young leaders day. As Kea House Captain,  I was one of those leaders. But, I got an added bonus that day. While the Mayor was speaking, I was back stage with a lady named Goff, the tech person. As well as meeting Charlie from What Now, I got to go on stage and give a gift to the mayor (lucky!) My favourite speakers were Babara Kendell and Rob Harley.They really showed me what it takes, and how to be a leader It was so much fun I bought 2 bags (one free for going backstage) and a Halogen Foundation badge. Plus, everyone got a cookie! 

Hi this is Summer I  was one of the House Captains chosen to go to the Young leaders day. I was inspired by some of the speakers. Some of the speakers were Farah Palmer, Babara Kendall, Nick Tuitasi, Rob Harley and the Mayor of Palmerston North, Jono Naylor. They all taught me to be greatful for what I've got and stand up for my self. When young leaders was over, we all got a yummy cookie. 

 

Rm 15's Oral Language Legend Retell!

This term in oral langauge Room 15 has been learning to retell a legend

 Room 15 students had to choose a Maori legend to retell with the aid of a visual prop. We could choose one of these legends:

Rona and the Moon, The Tree that Could not be Cut Down, Maui and the Fire Woman, The Fish of Maui, and Maui and the Sun.

Kids for Kids world vision concert with Suzanne Prentice

Hey guys it's Rach and Sha,

On the 9th of June 518 kids (17 schools) sung in a show (and morning rehersal) with Suzanne Prentice to raise money for children in developing countries. It's called Kids for Kids and the show this time round was 'Shake Rattle and Roll'  

At the rehearseal 25 people auditioned for the solo parts for 3 of the songs. I was one of the lucky nine people to be a soloist. The song I was singing solo was 'Don't Rubbish the Children' a song especially written for children in poverty. For the song there were two groups of three. I was in the first group with two other girls named Makyla and Rebecca. I sang the last half of the first verse with Rebecca.

Before the show my Mum bought me a red Kids for Kids top and after the show when we were getting off the stage, she got it signed for me by Suzanne  Prentice!:D  I had curly hair (60s style!) to suit the theme. After the show someone from the audience that I didn't know told me I was one of the most enthusiastic ones there! Yay!

How to minimize and publish a picture

Here's some steps .....

1. Open iPhoto and choose a picture.

2. Double click on the photo, then click file and click export .

3. Change everything to the smallest thing/size make sure it is saved on desktop and save it as JPEG but don't worry about the filename .

4. Now go into the blog and create a new post .                              

5. Click on the picture that is next to the abc tick in the tool bar above your writing .

6. Click choose file select your picture from the desktop.

7. Then choose where you want it to go on your page and click upload image .

8. There it is !!!

Lamington day

On the

 26th of May, it was you guessed it, Lamington day !! 

We Ruby and Summer and around about 15 others were lucky enough to leave Mrs Trembath with hardly anyone in her class to go make Lamingtons. We entered the hall to see nothing but Coconut, Sponge, Syrup and Lamingtons! After about 2 minutes of work we already had Coconut and the works plastered to our T-shirts and by the end of the day we had it everywhere that you could see! As usual there were arguments over what flavour was better (RASPBERRY!!!!!!). 

All of the rejected Lamingtons went straight into our mouths and trust us there were a lot of rejections !! But I guess it wasn't too bad.

Te Manawa

On Wednesday the 13th of May Room 15 and 13 all went on a huge bus to Te Manawa.  It was great fun at Palmerston North. There was a room full of Mirrors and motorbikes. We went scavenger hunting and then we had to go to the Library because it had started to rain.  I learnt to make a fish out of flax.

Room 15 &13 went to Te Manawa  for a trip to learn about Maori weaving. I  made a fish with Room 15  It was so hard to do but we got  there in the end. I enjoyed  the library  beacause it is  so warm and it is so  peaceful and it is so quiet  in the library.  It was so cool  in  Te  Manawa.

Going to Junk and disorderly !!!

I (Ruby) was one of the lucky Room 15 people that got picked to go to "Junk and Disorderly".

We all raced off to the hall not knowing what we were in for !!

When we got there we did a few exercises like ... introducing ourselves and doing weird dances !

After that we got a choice,  either make musical instruments out of junk   or    make giant flying pigs !!! I thought I was creative so I chose to make a flying pig !

Us pig makers split into 2 groups and got 2 pieces of willow to tape on top of each other. When  there were lots of those our group started to make a frame for the pig . After the frame was done we covered it all by using PVA to glue white tissue paper on it then we let it dry over lunch. When we came back we covered one pig with lime green tissue paper and the other pig with hot pink . After that we put pink and purple spots on the green one and black squiggles on the pink one.

We were there the whole day so we did not get time to put the wings on but trust me it was AWESOME !!!

Junk and Disorderly

 On May the 20th I  found out that I was leaving to go to the hall in  about 10 minutes. I didn't know what for but I was still excited. I asked the teachers Mrs Martin and Mrs Trembath whether I was in trouble. They replied, "No you're going to do something fun!!!"

When we arrived in the hall, all we could hear was the other kids then we heard a loud sound. It was Rob and his loud horn. While we were there we made giant flying pigs -  they were HUGE!!!!!

My group's one was lime green with pink and purple spots. It was coming to the end of the days so everyone got told to pick up the rubbish and get into a circle.

The day was over. We all said thanks then headed back to the quiet classroom.

Yes it worked - thanks Lucy for your help. We should all be able to learn this now and make our blog site more interesting.

On Wednesday 13th May, Room 15 and Room 13 went to Te Manawa. We left on a bus at 9 30.              At Te Manawa we all made fish out of flax .                                                                                                  I liked the mirror room. There were so many mirrors.

Raranga , Known as maori weaving. Hi I'm Mason , Room 15 /13 from Lytton Street School travelled to Te Manawa On Wednesday 13th of may.We went to learn how to weave a fish. Weaving  is not as easy as it looks,it is really hard.Even if you practice for a long time,you still struggle.

That's all I have to say.

On the 13th May we went to Te Manawa. I learnt how to weave flax fish, and I enjoyed the room of mirrors.
